Description
Retro Lube is a polyol ester originally developed for retrofitting automotive compressors from R-12 to R-134a. Its ease of use and compatibility with mineral oils, PAG oils and POE’s make retrofits far simpler — and because it’s pre-blended with MPD™ multipurpose universal A/C dye, you top up the oil and load a leak tracer in a single step. One bottle on the shelf instead of a rack of different oils.
Refrigerants: R-12 and R-134a systems.
Lubricants it replaces: mineral oils, PAG oils and POE / ester oils.
Combined with MPD™ dye — certified to meet SAE J2297 for R-134a and PAG lubricants — you can find the smallest leaks on virtually any system. See exactly where it fits on our R-134a lubricant chart.
Retro Lube has been proven in thousands of automobiles, heavy trucks, off-road equipment, buses and fire trucks — wherever a reliable, universal A/C lubricant is needed.
8 oz bottle · POE / 100 ester base · Made in the U.S.A. by Fluoro-Dye Products Inc. Download the A/C system capacity guide (PDF) or view the Safety Data Sheets.
Fluoro-Dye has engineered and manufactured A/C lubricants, tracer dyes and leak detection tools since 1987 — one of the first and most trusted names in the industry, made in Mesa, Arizona.
What oils can Retro Lube replace?
Retro Lube is a POE ester lubricant compatible with mineral, PAG and POE oils, so it can serve as a universal replacement across most R-12 and R-134a A/C systems — one lubricant instead of several.
Does it already contain dye?
Yes. Retro Lube comes pre-blended with MPD™ universal A/C dye, so you add the oil and load the UV leak tracer at the same time — no separate dye needed.
Is it for R-12 or R-134a systems?
Both. It was originally developed to make R-12 to R-134a retrofits easier and works in either system.
Do I need a UV light to use it?
To see the dye fluoresce you’ll want a high-intensity UV light — the Fluoro-Dye Versa Light is a rugged, rechargeable option. Any high-intensity UV black light will work.
Where can I check the right oil and capacity for my vehicle?
Use our R-134a lubricant chart to find the recommended viscosity and system capacity by vehicle and compressor — Retro Lube is listed as compatible across the board.
